I believe this is the first time D's eaten chili that I've made. He seemed to enjoy it. Obviously, I toned down the spice level a lot. This one is an adapted recipe from Joe's Butcher Shop. It's a sweet, mild chili.
● 2 Tbsp olive oil, divided
● 2 onions, chopped
● 4 garlic cloves, minced
● 2 lb. beef, ground
● 2 cans diced tomatoes
● 12 fluid oz. beer (I used Blue Moon)
● 12 ounce tomato paste
● 3 cups beef broth
● 1/4 cup chili powder, divided
● 1 Tbsp cumin, ground
● 1/4 cup brown sugar
● 1 tsp oregano, dried
● 1 tsp. coriander, ground
● 1 tsp salt
● 3 cans beans (I used black, kidney, and great northern)
Directions:
Place 2 Tbsp of oil in a large pot over medium heat.
Cook onions, garlic, and beef until meat is browned.
Add tomatoes, beer, tomato paste, 1 can of beans, and broth, then mix.
Add seasoning and mix.
Simmer 2 hours.
Add remaining beans and cook 45 minutes more
People who've visited our home always commented on our friendly, black-and-white cat. He was never shy about finding an idle hand for petting or an open lap for relaxing. He would flop down in the middle of whatever board game was being played, laying on his back and demanding tummy rubbing. He'd always meet people and the door and see them out, keeping an eye out and guarding the house. He would bring his Mommy catnip mice, dropping them at her feet.
Toad's ninth life ran out on April 23rd. He was well into his 16th year. He had weathered time in the great outdoors, tooth decay, an apartment flood, frequent infections, bladder stones, radiation therapy, and diabetes but maintained his happy demeanor. He even tolerated the short, loud person who would thump him on the head and pull his tail. He was part of the family and will be missed.
D helped his Mommy write something as well.
This year's GenCon was cut short for me due to a pesky class schedule. We had a short day on Thursday, and I didn't make it down at all on Saturday. Still, we had a good time. Kathy and I cleaned out some old CCG stuff and sold them in the auction store ($12.75!!), donating the items that didn't sell to Gamers for Humanity. We managed to get the ribbons together to have our Mayfair discounts again. I got some shiny, color shifting dice. Much of our Christmas shopping is done, and Danny has a new puppet friend and a magic wand with spinning LEDs.
We did play in NASCRAG this year, but ended up with a lame duck team. In a game that's listed as "heavy role playing", there shouldn't be players who are silent. Ugh. Looking forward to next year. I never got to the Dungeon Delve or the Tower of Gygax, but Kathy said the Gygax Memorial Die (6 feet across, full of donated dice througout the con) sold at the charity auction for $1500. All told, over $16000 was raised at auction for the late Gygax's favorite charity, Fisher House.
